LO2 Task 3 script - Audience

target audience

Hi im back from education UK, and im talking about the film Submarine (2010).  John Hartley (1987) and Ieg Ang (1991) stated that producers create invisible fiction or imaginary entities before creating a media product. the imaginary entity for Submarine is a 22 year old year old female, she lives with her flat mate in central London, she enjoys all things hipster, vintage and just things with a niche audience, they wear vintage clothing, things from charity shops and enjoy the modern hipster styles of Topshop. they play video games and sometimes most likely enjoy their own company. they are regarded as being outside of their cultural mainstream and quite independent.

gender

the target gender for Submarine (2010) is for 76% female, and 24% male. this is because the film does have a male star with the lead role which shows an image of their ideal partner for the females, their ideal partner in this film would be seen as Craig Roberts who plays the character of Oliver Tate in the film. there is also a slight niche audience for males as they are of a alternate select group that enjoys viewing this genre of film and also may idealise the female actors in the film for example to actor Yasmin Paige who played the character of Jordana Bevan.

age

The age range for this film is for 15-29 year olds, I see that because of the story line of the film would not be appropriate for a younger more immature audience as it handles serious issues such a bullying and personal relationships that mature over the film. also this would not appeal to an older audience as the story line is not very sophisticated and would only apply to another niche audience. this somewhat relates to the thoery of Denis Mcquail (1972)

lifestyle grades

The NRS is an organisation which features around demographics, the film submarine is in the demographic of ABC1, but mainly AB because of story line in the film is one that displays the values of upper and middle class characters and their daily lives, for example, this is shown by the. The ABC1 demographic is related to their social class and their jobs for example higher managerial, administrative or professional

spending power.

I think the spending power of the film Submarine audience is in the NRS social grade ABC1, this refer to social grade definition, they describe measure and classification of people of different social grade and income and earnings levels. i think this is because the film is mostly high budget because of the characters in the film and also we can tell this because of how well made and how well advertised the film was after production and before its release.

uses and gratifications

the uses and gratification theory relates to Denis Mcquail (1972), he stated that there are four reasons for why people watch films and media. one reason is escapism, this doesn't particularly relate to the film Submarine as this film is verisimilitude and relates to peoples everyday lives. i think this film fits into to section of personal identity. for example personal identity in this film is to find reinforcement in personal values, finding models for behaviour, and also gaining insight into their own life. we know this because of the films verisimilitude and its relate-ability to its audience, for example, a large part of the audience are school children and people in education, this relates to the plot and charters as they are in a high school environment whilst wearing the 'standard' school uniform, this show the verisimilitude as it relates to their daily lives whilst in some form of education.
